What you will Need

  • An old T-shirt
  • Bias tape
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Your sewing machine

Let’s Get Started

Dig out your pair of T-shirt from your closet.

Sundress out of a T-Shirt

Cut down the arms of the T-shirt with the help of scissors. You will notice that the arm-hole of the T-shirt is big for a small child.

Sundress Cutting

Hold the T-shirt with its arms cut out to your daughter’s body. Now, measure and determine the armhole size for your daughter.

Sundress Cutting 1

Sew a part of the arm hole as shown in the figure below. Note: Use matching thread for the sewing. Sew in a way that the sewing angle beautifully merges with the original seam of the arm hole.

Sundress Cutting 2

Cut off or trim the extra edge or triangle as sown in the figure below.

Now, assemble the fabric to the front of the shirt and determine the final width that you would like to keep.

After gathering the top of the dress to an ideal width, serge or sew the top so it will stay in place.

Now, sew the fold bias tape to the gathered fabric, as shown in the figure below. Before you sew the bias tape, make sure that the shorter side stays on top.

Now, repeat the same sewing process on the back, as shown in the figure below.

After you are finished with the tape bias, both front and back of your sundress are done. Next, I will show you how to finish the armholes and construct the ties.

Cut out two large pieces of bias tape. Fold one piece of the bias tape to the central seam and close the arm hole edge, as shown below. Repeat the process for the other arm hole.

Continue to attach the bias tape to the unfinished edge of the armholes. Intact the bias tape with the sewing pins or clips to keep them intact, as shown in the figure below.

Now sew all the bias tape with a double stitch to make sure that it securely fastened. Note here that, you will have to leave a considerable portions of the bias tape to be used as ribbons.

Remove the clips or the sewing pins as you sew the bias tape to the shirt.

All done. Doesn’t that look neat!
