Let’s start with men’s shoes and sneakers as a sub category. The picture given above clearly shows the different parts of the shoe, but there are also some features which are not usually part of the design but you can get them added of you so desire. Here is a brief description of those features.
Sometimes, an added layer is added between Achilles notch (or collar) and the heel counter. This is called heel tab. This is usually done to add another layer of color or foam for added comfort. Likewise, sometimes another layer is also added beneath the quarter, called midsole, which is to provide comfort and protection to the sole of the foot. The covering at the toe, called toe cap or foxing, is normally added to make the shoes more robust to wear and tear.
Women’s Shoes (Platform Heels)
As shown in the picture, many parts have similar titles as the men’s shoes. The back of the foot covering is called counter while the side coverings are called uppers. Sometimes, an added layer of clothing or some comfortable material is added to the inside part of the upper which is called lining and provides comfort and style together.
Below the heel, a sturdier material is added to provide strength and it is often replaceable. Also known as heel tip, top lift or top piece, this small piece provides the maximum protection to the heel and the entire shoe from getting damaged. The part where the vamp joins the platform is called toe spring and in this particular type of shoe, it is usually open, that is an open-toe design.
