Someone somewhere defined fashion as something that is so fleeting and so short lived that it has to be changed with every new season. Style however is part of one’s personality and a signature that one carries with attire and mannerisms.
I am prompted to write about this difference because it is not an unknown fact that every individual has a different build and has different knacks for fashion. And every new fashion trend does not necessarily suits everyone. Yes there are exceptions, red ties and high heels are fashion heavens for all men and women respectively. However, to actually look on point everyone need to find out their own idiosyncratic style statement and carry that as a signature.
Let me clarify the difference first. Fashion is the new cut on your coats and the new knot for your tie. It is also pairing of dangling earrings with your long shirts or tying your hair in a ponytail with high necks. Style however is wearing a brown suit if you have hazel brown eyes or keeping your hair long if you have a round face.
Fashion speaks to the camera, style speaks to our soul. Fashion speaks to the outward appearance and a feel good factor just by following trends. Style is the relationship to your internal being and establishes one’s identity in his or her own mind.
Moreover, fashion distracts you from the real purpose of this meticulous attention to appearance. It just makes you look like the rest of fashion trend followers out there. Wearing the same clothes and talking the same way. Style defines your individuality. Among all the good looking people, your style defines just your good looks.
Fashion is limited to clothes, and different age groups are supposed to have different fashions. Style is independent of clothes, age or gender. From the way you wear your hair to how to brush your fingers in it, to how you carry your clutch or a satchel, your style expresses your confidence and grace.
Your fashionable clothes can go out of style, but your stylish attire never will. So ladies and gents, next time you go shopping, make sure that you choose what suits you, in your own eyes and what makes you feel stylish and fashionable. Not just buy what the girl in the poster outside the shop was wearing.
In the end I’ll quote US fashion consultant and media personality, “Never confuse fashion and style. Fashion relies on unattainable looks…Style is about utilizing the best aspects of you.”
